Food and feeding

Western rainbow will accept all foods but it is very important to include vegetable matter in their diet. Offering lettuce, plants, or algal based foods are ideal for them. Supplement the diet with blood worm or brine shrimp.

Origin

Australia; commonly found in the north west of Australia.

Sexing

Unusually for rainbow fish, the males tend to have a slimmer profile; the females will have much deeper bodies.

Breeding

Like all rainbow fish, these need spawning mops or moss to lay their eggs on. Once the spawning is complete, remove the mops or moss to another tank to prevent the parents eating them. After 2 weeks the fry should hatch but will be very small, only attempt to feed them on Infusoria or vinegar eels until they grow slightly. Once they have grown they can be offered crushed flake.

Lifespan

The expected life span for Melanotaenia splendida australis is 5 years.

Short description

Although these fish are quite hardy, they are very prone to struggling with high nitrates. Always keep a tight lid on the tank as they are very good jumpers.
