Food and feeding

Akar bettas should accept all foods offered. Quality flake should be given along with treats of small live of frozen foods. Cyclops, daphnia, and brine shrimp are ideal for this.

Origin

Asia; Akar bettas are to be found in Borneo.

Sexing

Males will have extended dorsal and anal fins. They will also show a green iridescence on the gill covers, there will be no colouration in this area on the female.

Breeding

Betta akarensis are a mouth brooding Betta. Softening the water will often induce spawning which will be initiated by the male displaying to the female. When the eggs are laid the male will scoop them into his mouth and do all of the brooding. The female should be removed once the male is holding or he may swallow the eggs. When the fry have been released, they can be fed on newly hatched brine shrimp.

Lifespan

The expected life span for Betta akarensis is 2-3 years.

Short description

Water quality must be high to keep Akar bettas although they are tolerant of a range of water parameters. They prefer to be kept in groups.Keep this Betta with peaceful species only.
