Short description

The Madagascar species is regarded as one of the more peaceful species of rainbow fish, however they could be aggressive to smaller tank mates. When cared for correctly they will display beautiful markings that reflect of their silver scales making them a great addition to the aquarium. When kept in a school they provide a lot of activity for the keeper to observe and the plus side has to be that they are tolerant of a wider range of water parameters compared to more delicate species of fish. They should be kept in groups of at least 6 specimens so as such a medium to large aquarium should be used to house them, keeping them in a group will make them more settled and if other species of fish are housed also they will not be aggressive towards them. Like all fish they do also require good water quality, a filtration system should be used that is capable of dealing with all the tank inhabitants waste and regular water changes are required for this fish to maintain its wonderful colouration.

The Madagascar Rainbow fish are a very active species so make sure that there is an open area at the front of the aquarium to allow them plenty of swimming space, planting should be offered at the rear and sides of the aquarium to provide them with areas of cover to make them feel more secure. They are excellent jumpers, always use a tight fitting lid on the aquarium to prevent this and make sure that the water is well oxygenated by using small power heads or aiming the outlets from the filters towards the water surface to increase gaseous exchange.

Food and feeding

These rainbow fish will readily accept all foods. Quality flakes or pellets should be given, treat with blood worms or brine shrimp.

Sexing

Males are more colourful than the females with a more pointed first dorsal fin. He females tend to be slightly darker.

Breeding

Several water changes need to be performed to induce spawning. The female will deposit her eggs on plants, and this can continue for a period of months. The eggs should hatch after 6-7 days, once the fry are free swimming they can be fed on rotifers or Infusoria. As they grow, feed them on newly hatched brine shrimp.
