Food

The African Butterfly Fish is Omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods including live, frozen and flake foods.

Sexing

The anal fin of the male has rays that form a tube with which he inseminates the female. The female has a rounded anal fin and might be plumper than the male when she is heavy with eggs.

Breeding

Start a Pair of African Butterfly Fish in a breeding tank with plenty of floating plants. Feed them plenty of live foods until they begin spawning. The eggs will float to the top after they are laid. Remove the eggs from the breeding tank and place them in a tank with identical water conditions to keep the parents from eating them. The fry are difficult to feed because they require live foods that are small enough for them to consume. Their food must also be able to remain at the surface of the aquarium where they are.

Lifespan

The African Butterfly Fish will live for up to 5 years.

Origin

The African Butterfly Fish can be found in areas of Central and West Africa in the Niger River, Lake Chad, Ogowe Basin, and the Congo River Basin.

Short Description

The African Butterfly Fish has very unique, wing-like fins which are what they earned them their common name. They are generally docile but have been known to nip the fins of those that swim in their top water level. Because they are top level swimmers they require a tight lid to prevent them from escaping.
