Food and feeding

The Savanna Tetra will accept all foods offered. Use a quality flake to provide the staple diet and vary this by feeding treats of small live foods like brine shrimp and micro worms. Only feed small amounts at any one time.

Origin

South America; Savanna tetras are found in the Amazonian River Basins.

Sexing

Males will have a slender body shape; the females will have a more rounded belly.

Breeding

Use a small tank for breeding purposes and subdue the lighting. Add some spawning mops or use fine leaved plants. The female will release up to 300 eggs and at this stage, once the eggs are fertilised, the parents should be removed. Once the fry are free swimming they can be fed on newly hatched brine shrimp or Infusoria initially, after a couple of weeks, they should be large enough to accept crushed flake.

Short description

Always keep Hyphessobrycon stegemanni in small groups of at least six specimens. Add hiding places to the tank but allow for open swimming spaces as well.
