Information about care
Food and feeding
Although this fish is classed as an omnivore it will enjoy plenty of meaty foods in its diet. Quality flakes or pellets should be given for the staple diet. Bloodworms, chopped earthworms are also ideal as treats for this fish.

Origin
Central America; it is to be found in Mexico, Nicaragua and Honduras.

Sexing
Juveniles will be quite difficult to sex; mature males will develop a nuchal hump.

Breeding
The male will be very aggressive to the female when the eggs have been laid. Either remove the female or add a divider to the tank for her own safety. The male will act as the sole parent and once the fry are free swimming, they can be fed on newly hatched brine shrimp.

Lifespan
The expected life span for this fish is 15 years.

Short description
These fish need a large tank with rocks and wood for décor. They are very messy eaters so a good filtration system must be provided. Try not to add nocturnal catfish with these fish as they will disturb their rest through the night.

My Midas Cichlid that I got in August is about 5-6 inches now. It has some tan markings on it’s scales both sides. I was wondering if it’s infected or it’s just color changing? Also, ever since I put two Red devils with her, she hasn’t been as aggreesive. Is there any way I can make it aggressive again? It’s in a 35 gallon with the other two Red devils.

Dear Kuam, infections are usually followed by behaviour changes such as getting impassive, scared or so. If the things are symetrical on both sides, then it is probably colour change only.

RE your second question: Usually, a fish become less/more aggressive if other fish become less/more dominant. If you want it more aggressive, consider moving your Midas cichlid to another tank.

Thanks for the advice Admin. If the problem is infection, is there any cure?

Hello Kuam.

I would recommend to use some Sera products such as Sera costapur and Baktopur. The infection should be treated in a stand-alone tank.

I have listed all of my books in order to find possible illness, however I wasn’t able to find any where I can be 100%-ly sure. The symptoms aren’t clear. So I hope your fish is not sick:).

Hi Admin, I was wondering if you know anyone or any website I can visit to buy some white/yellow Midas cichlids? I want to find a mate for my female Midas. Thanks.

Hello Kuam,

Thanks for this question:). I spent some time searching the web and I found this link. I hope they will be able to deliver this fish to you safely.

Other fish exporters usually don't have Midas cichlid on their stock list.

I heard that Jeff Rapps was a good dealer. Have you ever order from him before? If he said that he’ll send me something similar to a yellow midas cichlid in a picture, it would be alike right?

I haven't heard of him, however that above-mentioned link points to his stock:). The Midas cichlids are mainly red, yellow and white, or their colours are mix of red/yellow/white. I'd recommend you to ask for pictures or some more/less detailed information before you purchase anything.

I have been experimenting on a few cichlids and I found that an already aggressive fishes aggression will almost double to the point where it no longer desires to mate if left in isolation for an extended period of time (this was done with a midas and a black convict).

I am surprised that no one told Kaum that her tank is TOOOOO SMALL for 3 midas’s. 35 Gallons is not enough for one let alone 3. A single midas needs 75 gallons minimum.

Why do you need your fish to be more aggressive??? Thats a good thing if its not being aggressive. By yourself a pitbull and feed your kids to it if you need something aggressive.

Hi Ian. Are you looking for information on Amphilophus labiatus (Red Devil) or Amphilophus citrinellus (Midas cichlid) - current page?

Is it’s the first option, just open the link above. Anyway, big cichlids from Central America breed similary. Check article about Jack Dempsey cichlid, the breeding process is very similar.

Feel free to ask more questions after reading that article.

Hi-I have a five year old male Red Devil. He’s a great pet and I enjoy him. I have some large marbles in his tank; he likes to dig his holes and fill them up with the marbles and clink the marbles on the glass.

Any suggestions about other things or ways to entertain Biggs?

Thanks alot!
