Food and feeding

Largescale foureyes are always looking for food and need a high protein diet. Supply them with fruit flies, brine shrimp and tubifex. Largescale foureyes will also accept shrimp, mussels and beef heart, they prefer to feed from the surface but will swim to the substrate if required to feed.

Origin

South and Central America.

Sexing

Males have a modified anal fin that develops into a gonopodium for transmitting the sperm.

Breeding

Anableps anableps fertilise the eggs by internal insemination but the strange thing is that the gonopodium of the male can only swing one way so the female has to approach the male on the correct side for mating to take place. These fish are livebearers and the young will accept crushed flake or newly hatched brine shrimp immediately.

Lifespan

The expected life span for Largescale foureyes is 6 years.

Short description

The most striking feature of these fish has to be the eyes. They have split lens which gives them the ability to see above the water surface and below it at the same time.
