Information about care
Besides original carps species, which live in lakes and rivers, there are many Koi's colour varieties which can be found in the aquarium shops.

The most known types of koi are:

- The Long Fin Koi
- Butterfly Koi
- Assorted Koi

Nowdays, the most of Koi's are produced in Asia. However, it's easy to breed this fish at your own garden/fish pond.

Due to large adult size, it's not recommended to keep Koi's in ordinary tanks. Beginners use to buy this kind of carps because of their colours, fins and peaceful behaviour. As fish grow, small tanks are getting unusable.

Since this fish can be found almost everywhere within the freshwater biotopes of Europe, Asia, Euro-Asia, they will survive freezing colds easily. If the temperature is lower than 5°C, you should consider moving fish into a bit warm water.

Koi's will appreciate enough plants and driftwood pieces. Feed them with spinach, lettuce, tubifex worms, blood worms, small fish, daphnia, or brine shrimp. Feeding should be processed at least 3 times a day.

Don’t be fooled: koi can grow over 120cm and weight up to 20kg. They are not suited for a home aquarium. The Japanese originally bred koi to be viewed from above, and in my opinion, they are much more attractive that way. Koi will eat plants. Koi will eat almost anything edible in their pond. When buying koi it should be taken into account that they will be huge. This should also be taken into account when planning a pond. A good rule of thumb is 500 US gal per koi. They may be cute and small in the store, but they will be huge in a few months.

As for my personal experience with koi. I have 12. They are like dogs living in the water. Every time they see me coming toward the pond, they all gather under the bridge and beg for food by popping thier noses out of the water. It’s really adorable. I recommend them if you have the space, the time, and the money.

Yes, I also have a koi and he is my favorite fish. I have him in my big 3 feet tank with a pair of angelfish. He is about 30cm now, so do I need to find him a bigger home soon?

Hi Nakita,

Yes, you’ll have to find a new solution. I recommend 2m x 2m x 1m at least.

I can't afford a such big tank! What should I do when he gets too big? He's too big to flush down the toilet. Is there a nice way of killing it? Can you freeze fish?

Nakita,

If you can’t move your fish into bigger aquarium, then give it to somebody else instead of killing him/her! I am sure that ZOOs will accept it.

Aqua-Fish.Net is a place for fish lovers, not for fish killers!

You had to learn about fish which you raise before you bought them.

Oh my, I never thought that kois will grow big like 3ft! I have 8 of these. They are now at least 3 inches long.
