Information about care
Food and feeding
Feed these fish a vegetable diet consisting of catfish pellets, algae wafers or a quality vegetable based flake. They should be given treats of blood worms or shrimp pellets to provide some protein.

Origin
South America; they are found in the Amazonian River Basins of Brazil.

Sexing
Males will grow fleshy tentacles around the snout; these may be visible to a lesser degree in the females. Females will be darker on their bellies.

Breeding
The female will lay her eggs in a cave or tunnel and the male will take on all of the parenting duties. The eggs should hatch after 6-7 days but it will take the fry a further 2 weeks to consume their yolk sac. At this stage, they can be fed on newly hatched brine shrimp.

Lifespan
The expected life span for this fish is 5-8 years.

Short description
Provide these fish with hiding places and ensure that there is some bogwood in the tank as they will gnaw on this to aid their digestion. Only keep one male specimen in the tank as they can become aggressive and territorial to each other.
