Information about care
Food and feeding
The food for this fish needs to be low in protein but high in carbo-hydrates, this is why it is often best to use specialist goldfish flakes or pellets to feed this fish. It is a voracious eater so the feeds should be kept down to what the fish can eat in two minutes. This should be done twice daily. Shelled peas, some blanched leaf vegetables and bloodworms should also be included in the diet.

Origin
Originally from Asia, this fish is related to the original native brown carps, selective breeding has created the modern gold strains.

Sexing
These can be difficult fish to sex. In spawning mode the males will often display white spots on their gill plates.

Breeding
It is often easier to breed these fish in ponds rather than aquariums but both are possible. The female will lay her sticky eggs on plants and they should hatch in 48-72 hours. The fry are very small when newly hatched but will grow in size rapidly. Their coloration will remain brown like their ancestors, but after 12 months the adult coloration should show through.

Lifespan
Under normal circumstances their lifespan is anywhere between 10-15 years but there are cases reported of these fish living up to 45 years.

Short description
There are many variations to this fish and it has a reputation of being easy to keep. Unfortunately this has often led to its demise as they are sometimes kept in unsuitable tanks. As with any fish, they require optimum water conditions.

Bear in mind that you need a lot of space for your goldfish, since they grow very quickly and they are messy. Also, make sure that the water in your tank is of good and stable quality.

This species likes colder waters more than very hot ones. For this purpose, consider some chiller if the water temperature exceeds 30 °C. In order to keep the temperature at stable level, don’t put the tank into direct sunlight.

They are great fish but they are very messy and you should keep the water under stable chemistry values. Don't use water out of tap because of the chlorine. If you do so, use some chemicals which remove chlorine from the tank.

Puffy, it is ascites (99.99%). Go to the shop as soon as possible and buy medicaments. Sellers should know which treatment is suitable.

Maybe it is too late for your Goldfish.

Hi, I have a gold fish that has been alive for about 6 years. He is very sick and we give him medicine, but nothing seems to help. He is extremely mellow and he lays on his side on the bottom of the tank now. He also has A LOT of this white gunk all over him, but we clean the tank all of the time, and it is filtered. Can you please tell me, if you know why he is like this, and if there is anything else we can do, I would really apreciate it, thanks.

Kevin, is the "white gunk" the white spot disease? If so, here is a link to the article talking about Ich and how to cure fish: link.

The symptoms which you mentioned make me feel that your Goldfish will probably die:(.

I have a question. I have fantail goldfish, (2 calico fantails, and 2 black moor goldfish) which I LOVE, but I want to put other big fish with them now that I’m upgrading my tank. Stupid pet suppliers say that I can ONLY put goldfish with goldfish, and get snobby when I ask if there’s any exceptions. Is it true I can only buy other goldfish?

@Ashleigh8: It is not true, you can keep more big fishes together even they’re not the same species.

However, if you’re looking for good compatibility of fish in your aquariums, I recommend you to keep Goldfish specimens together without introducing other fish there.

I have several gold fish in my tank... They are quite playful, they love getting into holes of decors like barrels and castles, this one goldfish of mine got stuck in the hole of the castle thus breaking its tail which cause it to cut off. She had difficulty swimming and it is swimming upside down. But she was so energetic... Thought at first she would die.... But then she is coping up... Will her tails grow again to normal length?

@lovey: Usually all fins can grow back to their original sizes, if not bigger.

Make sure the water is of good quality as fungus can develop on these fins very easily. If you spot something like this, immediately change about 30-40% of water and additionally use some medicament.

Hey, I had 2 cichlids; a jack dempsy and another one of some sort . Not the point , I put a gold fish in there with them and they ate it. I had a gold fish in there before I got the gold fish, they didn't bother him. If I introduce the gold fish first and then the jack dempsey, will it still eat the gold fish?

I have two new goldfish. When I turn on the aquarium light they get very jumpy and nervous. If I leave the light on for a certain period of time will they get used to it?

I just got a new fantail... Her name is Zoey. (well, it might be a girl, haha) Anyway, I was wondering how big she will get. I looked all over and the answers are all different. I just want the best for her :] .

Oh, and when I come up to the tank she comes and wiggles around against the tank by me :] , hehe.

Thanks!

@Anonymous: This species may reach over 50 cm if kept in ponds that are deep enough. However, the Goldfish species usually reaches maximally 15cm in home aquariums.

@Violet9: They should get used to turning the light on and off. You should turn on the light during daytime and turn off lights too, so there will be another source of light after this.

@alex 1997: It usually doesn't matter. It depends on how active, passive, dominant or non-dominant, self-defending or aggressive the goldfish is/are.
