Information about care
Food and feeding
These fish will accept any food offered. Use quality flake for their staple diet and supplement this with vegetable matter in the form of spinach, lettuce or peas. They will also nibble on any tender plants in the tank.

Origin
Africa, Asia, and Australia; adults will inhabit the coastal areas but juveniles will often be found in brackish water ways.

Sexing
There are no visible differences between the sexes.

Breeding
As of yet there are no reported cases of these fish breeding in the aquarium.

Lifespan
The expected life span for this fish is 10 years.

Short description
Often these fish are placed into fresh water tanks; they are much more at ease in brackish or saltwater conditions. The adults will spawn in freshwater rivers before returning to the saltwater coastal areas. Hiding places must be provided in the tank along with a good filtration system.

Strange to read that the temperament is peaceful to other species of fish, since mine is literally pecking away at my one Angel in particular. Loves the fins?

Why this behaviour?

Angels and monos cannot be in the same tank for the simple reason that the mono doesn’t understand why the angel has feelers. If you’ve ever kept two (or more) monos in the same tank, you’ll notice that they clean each other - they’ll go face to face and one will bow down while the other one picks off any unwanted debris (etc..) off the other’s body. Sort of like gorillas picking fleas off each other. Your mono sees the angel and thinks he shouldn’t have the feelers (because monos don’t have them) - so he’s literally trying to nip them off, thinking he’s doing the angel a favor by removing them. The angel has no idea what’s going on, and - being the friendly fish he is - will let the mono come right up to him every time. It’s a sure recipe for a disfigured angel fish. You have to get rid of one or the other or put them in separate tanks. In general, monos aren’t very compatible with most slow moving community fish such as angels, discus or gouramis. Scats are good tank mates for them or - my recommendation - load up on monos. Nothing is cooler than a tank full of schooling monos!

You mention that scats make good companions for monos. My question is whether I should put a scat in my tank with a puffer and a mono. My 10 gallon tank has one puffer and one mono in it. I like having more then a couple fish in a tank. I just need to know if they will get along with each other.

@chris: A 10 gallon aquarium is too small for a Mono (probably for a puffer too, it depends on which species you keep), nor for a scat. You should think about setting up a bigger tank. And... Scats are aggressive.

@Anonymous: Yes, they should get along. Just make sure that all specimens are of similar size, otherwise bigger could eat smaller ones. Also make sure that water is of acceptable quality and parameters for both species.

Regarding silver dollars: Yes, they can be kept together. Again, make sure that specimens of similar sizes are kept together before buying.

Would monos work with goldfishes and koi’s?

@akilamurali: No, since Koi’s are coldwater fish. Also read the description properly; Finger fish requires brackish water at least.

Just had one died last night, he was at least 18 years old. He was our buddy, had moved through 5 houses with us, and breathed his last molecule last night. Never had a fish disease, no ill health, very sturdy and rugged, testy at times, but never aggressive, he was our salt tank matriarch, yes he was salt in our house.
