let's test your knowledge!

slovensky, français, deutsch
Information about care
Family
Parkeriaceae

Common Names
Water Sprite, Indian Fern, Water Fern

Origin
Asia, they are widespread over most of Asia.

Lighting Requirements
Bright lighting is required to get this plant to grow at a reasonable rate, too low a level of lighting will result in leggy plants.

Propagation
This is a rhizome plant so propagation is quite easy, remove the mother plant from the aquarium and divide the rhizome into smaller pieces. These will then grow as individual plants when the pieces of rhizome are re-planted in the substrate. Always make sure that the rhizome is not completely submerged under the substrate or it will rot.

Difficulty
Medium

Short Description
In the wild, these plants are normally found in marshy areas but they will grow as well when they are completely submerged. In some countries the leaves are used in cooking and even eaten raw in salads. They prefer softer, acidic water and the use of a CO2 system will definitely benefit the growth rate of this plant.

I am an aquatic ecologist at Lake Kariba Fisheries Research Institute, Zimbabwe. Ceratopteris thalictroides has appeared for the first time in Lake Kariba one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.

The weed appears to be relying on other weeds like water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and pond weed (Potamogeton spp) for support. it is quickly drying out and slowly dying since July 2007 when it was firet seen.

I can't believe that it can be grown in gravel and used in aquariums because of it's appearance this part of the world.

Continue updating me on this species of weed as I am researching on it, to identify natural conditions that favour its proliferation and also determine whether it's good or a nuisance in the aquatic environment. Is it very invasive, does it spread fast. Reply and send me more literature on my email address nobuhle07REMOVETHIS@yahooREMOVETHIS.com.
