Food and feeding

As is usual with large catfish, Brown bullheads will eat anything that is put to their mouth. Offer the fish pellets and algae wafers along with earth worms, shrimps and prawns.

Origin

North America; Brown bullheads are found naturally in various waterways of Canada and right down to Louisiana.

Sexing

There are no visible differences between the sexes.

Breeding

There are no reported cases of Ameiurus nebulosus breeding in the aquarium; in the wild they will lay their eggs in shallow pits in the substrate. The eggs will be clumped into one large sticky ball and the fry will hatch after 8 days.

Lifespan

The expected lifespan of Brown bullhead is 6-8 years.

Short description

Only keep these fish with large tank mates, Brown bullheads will consume any smaller tank mates. Due to their adult size they must be housed in a large aquarium. In the UK, you are required to obtain a licence to keep these fish.
