Information about care
Food and feeding
There diet is mainly algal based; sinking pellets or wafers should be added to the tank. Bog wood is also required as they will gnaw on this. Weekly treats of blood worm or brine shrimp should be provided.

Origin
Bristle nose catfish originate from South America.

Sexing
Females will be slightly smaller than the males; the bristles on their head will be less dominant.

Breeding
Crevices or caves should be provided in the tank. The male will select a spawning site and if the female is happy with it, she will follow the male inside and lay her eggs. The female will play no further part in raising the young. The male will fan the eggs until hatching and a few days later the fry will emerge. Once their yolk sacs have been consumed, they should be fed on a high vegetable diet.

Lifespan
Expected lifespan is 15+ years.

Short description
Males are very territorial especially when protecting their eggs, females tend to wander from shelter to shelter. These make excellent glass cleaners on the tank and will consume algae from the plants.

I just got 2 new bristle nose catfish and they are about 2.5 cm long but they don't have bristles. Is it because they're young or may be here another reason?

Hi Puffy, don’t worry. Bristles will grow as the fish get older.

Moreover, females don’t have any bristles at all. Bristles grow differently. The strongest male will have them as the first one. It is also possible that an adult male may have very small bristles if his role in the community is low.

Just a random query due to my inexperience... Can fish such as bristlenose catfish be kept with dwarf cichlids, i.e Ram Cichlids. Water conditions etc. are similar. Is there anything else?

@Dropkidd: Simple answer; Yes. They can be kept together as long as some of species kept in the aquarium isn’t aggressive toward other fish.

Bear in mind that if you want to breed these catfish, cichlids (or other fish) will try to eat the newborns. Also add caves and create hiding places in your aquarium; Sometimes cichlids just try how other fish’ fins taste (it’s not aggression, just a normal behaviour).
