I have a silver shark, balantiocheilos melanopterus, and it has a reddish coloring under its fins which I have not seen there before. I have identified it as a general disease and would you kindly let me know if I can cure this and will the disease cause harm to the other fish in my tank.

Hi Betty,

It's not possible to determine the disease using mentioned symptoms 100%-ly, however here is a list of potential diseases and basic description:

1) Ascites (very early stage). Ascites might kill other fish and it's recommended to put sick fish into another tank, and you should start the cure. Medicine is usually available at every aquatic shop, since it's a quite common disease.

2) Blood injury. This happens when fish fight, or when they crash any decoration (when chasing each other). If the water chemistry is stable and a bit alkaline and hard, then you don't need to cure this issue. Anyway, you may buy and use some antibacterial medicament.

3) Erythrodermatitis. I'm not sure Bala Shark can get this disease, but the symptoms of your fish fall into this disease's description and it's early stages. For curing this illness, you'll need another tank and antibacterial medicaments. They should be available at aquatic shops. SERA products work fine (I'm not advertising anything). This disease can be treated in 30 days after starting the cure.

If you need more details on using SERA products for cure, send a message to webmaster, please. I simply don't want to make any advertisement here.
