Food and feeding
This fish will accept all foods offered. Use a quality flake or cichlid pellets for the staple diet and also give these fish treats of live or frozen foods twice a week. Brine shrimp and blood worms are ideal. To provide vegetable matter add shell peas or spinach to the tank.

Origin
Central America

Sexing
Males will be larger than the females and may develop a nuchal hump. The females will display a black circle on their dorsal fin.

Breeding
Add some upturned terracotta plant pots to the breeding tank, these will provide potential spawning sites. The female will clean the chosen site and lay her eggs on the underside of the roof. When the eggs have been fertilised, the male will guard the territory while the female tends the brood. The eggs should hatch after 4 days and a few days later the fry will be free swimming. At this point they will accept newly hatched brine shrimp to eat.

Lifespan
The expected life span for this fish is 10 years.

Short description
This species of cichlid is classed as peaceful and should not be kept with boisterous tank mates. They demand high water quality with excellent filtration.
