I started keeping aquarium fish 4 years ago. Like every new fan of this hobby, I wasn’t able to set-up a good fish tank and I made some mistakes. In this article, I want to let you know about beginner’s mistakes.

I want to buy aquarium, what should I do first?

You need to know something about the aquarium fish you want to keep. Normally that people buy fish that eat each other. Your aquarium can be looking very good, but the fish won’t feel good. This is something you should keep in mind when you decide to take up this aquarium hobby:

1) Place your aquarium somewhere where it will stay for a long time.
2) Larger aquarium = Better aquarium. The conditions in a fish tank are more stable in a larger aquarium than a smaller one.
3) Buy a good filtration system.
4) Buy efficient neons that will give good light conditions for your plants to grow.
5) Buy gravel or something else for the bottom of your aquarium.

When the aquarium is in a good loaction, then filtration, neons, heater, and stable conditions are in place, you can go ahead and buy some aquarium fish. Remember, that the fish aren’t there for you, but you’re here for the fish. If they feel good, your aquarium will look nice. If you have nice and clear water filled with many chemicals, your fish will probably die.

Don’t forget about these basic principles:

1) When you buy fish that need to be in groups of 10+, buy 10+, not less.
2) When you buy aggressive fish, don’t buy other, smaller fish, or any other fish who could become a dinner.
3) If you have a small aquarium, don’t buy fish that are very big when they’re adult.
4) Always ask about fish needs your shop assistant.

Aquarium fish need plants (except cichlids). Why? Plants are the usual hiding place, they are natural filtration, and they look good. Some fish like to fight other fish and plants in an aquarium is a great way how to prevent these fights. When you buy aquatic plants, don’t forget about these simple rules:

1) Plants that grow very fast can be very good when you have a new tank.
2) Plants have their needs and you can’t combine tropical plants with plants that like cold water.
3) You must take care of any aquarium plant.
